Carl A. Roberts
writing has always been a strong hobby of mine, whether it’s writing a song, book, sitcom or commercial. What ever my mind would think of, ears would hear or eyes could see, I always felt the best way to describe my thoughts would be thru words. Illustrations of the mind! No one could set boundaries around that. There is no rules or guide lines to follow, Just my thoughts and me. As a child growing up, I was influenced by music. All types of music. My father use to say “Carl (Mark) you are going to be in the music business when you get older. I thought the same thing! Writing rhymes with my brother and cousins wasn’t because I wanted to be a rapper, it was more along the lines of me loving to write. Sitting back writing a story over a track blow my mind. When I was in the 7 grade my English teacher Ms McMillan said something that sticks with me till this very day... "Carl I love the way you use and express your words. Make sure you use that skill as you grow older wow!!" I hope this is what she meant.
Writing got put on hold for a while as I branched off into trying to manage talent. I got my first real feel of the music business while assisting Bert Price on a come back demo for the boy group "Imajin". From long studio sessions, watching Jamal (Jstar) write songs to hot tracks. I know that’s what I wanted to be around. That was me! While working with Imajin on their come back album I was introduced to Lena Lindsay of Gelz Management. She was managing a female R&B group called “Her Sanity” that had a recording contract with Motown Records. That was the beginning of something what would change my life in a great way forever. Lena quickly saw the talent in a growing 22 year old. She took me under her wings and company as an assistant, teaching me the A&R passion that was under Gelz Management. From booking shows, setting up shows, interviews for the group, studio time for others signed artist under Gelz Management and any thing under, over or beyond that, I learned it all just from working under Lena. After leaving the management company in 2004 I branched off on my own management journey, managing a rapper out of queens named “Rah Chink”. Working with Rah Chink taught me a lot about doing things on your own and how hard it is to try to have full control over some ones career. Just moving around working with different artist and producers brought me to my next big thing. Working under Andrew "steel" Lewis CEO and founder of Hollyhood Music and artist Jase. Hollyhood Music was an independent record company with their own inside producer’s managers and artist. Working with produces like Black Out Movement who did Mims “This is Why I'm Hot” track and Lex of Ghostwriters who produced the chart toping Keyshia Cole’s “Heaven Sent” and many other records, kept me around the people, talent, and writers that I needed to be around to pursue my music career.
